In May 2017 Vivovbarefoot announced its Ultra 3 land and sea shoes would incorporate both land and sea into their construction to make the amphibious footwear as eco-friendly as they are foot-friendly. Teaming up with plant-based, performance-driven foam manufacturer Bloom, Vivobarefoot has topped their Ultra 3's rubber soles with hexagonal cages woven from an EVA foam made of algae biomass.

Bloom Foam collects their algae from freshwater sources at high risk of algal bloom. When blooms occur, they typically kill of chunks of marine plants and animals in their path. Chemical waste containing phosphorus and nitrates - ingredients typically found in fertilizers - trigger and spur algal blooms, sometimes to devastating effects of the surrounding ecosystem. By "farming" the algae in susceptible areas, Bloom Foam is able to turn potentially harmful biomasses into something useful. Their algae foam both helps to prevent unchecked blooms, and generates a material more conscientious and sustainable than synthetic and petrochemical foams.

According to Vivobarefoot, every pair of Ultra 3 shoes produced "will help re-circulate 57 gallons of filtered water back into natural habitats, and prevent the equivalent of 40 balloons full of CO2 being released into the Earths atmosphere."

With a hex grip outsole made from sticky rubber, and a fully vented upper, the Ultra 3s will also give wearers support, traction, and breathability on wet, dry, and wet/dry rocky terrain. They weigh just 6.7 ounces.

Vivobarefoot Ultra 3 algae shoes come in black, white, and red, and men's and women's styles.
