One of my most notable attributes is laziness. And thanks to the E5 Kitchen Knife Sharpener, one of my most notable attributes is thriving! For a good 3 months my fiancee, She-Ra: Princess of Power, had been nagging requesting that I "do something" about our block full of dull kitchen knives. So I went on Amazon to order a new sharp and shiny set delivered right to my doorstep in 2 days or less. But that approach was met with...reproach.

She told me I needed to find, like, a butcher or bladesmith or someone and physically drop off our existing kitchen knives to be sharpened. And then go pick them back up when they were done! And the only place I found that would do it was almost a 10-minute drive from my house! The thought of doing this made my bones ache.

Happily, Work Sharp Culinary contacted me about their E5 Kitchen Knife Sharpener a short 6 or so weeks after She-Ra's frustration with me and our dull knives really started to build. They asked if I'd like to try their electric sharpener, which they told me could do everything "from honing all the way to reprofiling your prized blades." And while I would have to hold my knives and run them through the sharpening belt, I was assured this process was intuitive.

First, kudos to Work Sharp Culinary for the E5's packaging, which is not only slick with its sharpener-shaped box design and magnetic front flap, but also contains a simple, illustrated rundown of what's in the box and what the components do. Inside, everything was ready to use - sharpener assembled, belt installed - and I just had to attach the cord and plug it in. A complete instruction booklet was included in the package, but so was a quick-start guide for the fans of TL;DR like me. I sharpened my first knife, a Pro-Balance adjustable weight chef's knife, using only the quick-start directions.

It was a lazy man's dream.

A single button starts the E5 sharpener. You click it 1 to 3 times depending on whether you want to refine, sharpen, or shape your knife, and that tells the device how fast to move its belt, and for how long. Then you align the base of your knife in the right or left guide and pull it slowly through, alternating from right to left with each stroke. The sharpener stops automatically when the cycle is complete (45 to 90 seconds) at which point you can test the knife, and then opt to Shape it if it's not quite sharp enough, or use the included ceramic honing rod to finish the edge if it is. For my dull-as-ditch-water Pro-Balance, it took a Shape cycle after the initial sharpening. Same for the santoku knife I sharpened next.

The whole process, for both knives, took less than 10 minutes. And it was kind of fun. And it made me feel skilled and handy, like what life must feel like all the time to people who aren't lazy.

Work Sharp Culinary says the E5 electric sharpener creates the same edges as manufacturers honing blades in their factories to sell. After a week of using our newly-sharpened knives, She-Ra agrees. Mission accomplished.
