Hey Joe Coffee Brewing Travel Mug

Check It Out

In an attempt to address the issues of saving money, supporting green, running late, and being bored, Hey Joe has developed a travel mug that brews its own coffee. It's a self-contained purveyor of caffeine that hopes to eliminate: dropping $2.50/day on Starbucks drip; tossing out mountainous piles of paper cups; skipping or forgetting the only good thing about your morning because you were supposed to be at work 10 minutes ago; and falling asleep during boring meetings, lectures, and phone calls with girls who Never. Stop. Talking.

The Hey Joe travel mug contains two sections, separated into compartments at the halfway point. The top part holds up to 14 ounces of water, and the bottom stores coffee grounds after the water heats and drips through. A tray in the center accepts either a Hey Joe coffee pod (looks like a raised disc packet sealed with coffee filters) or your own preferred ground coffee.

Hey Joe operation requires loading coffee into the mug's center drawer, adding water into its top reservoir, and pushing a button between 1 and 3 times. To me, this button pushing step is the coolest of Hey Joe's tricks. Push the brew button once and you'll get hot coffee brewed to exactly 140 degrees F. Push it twice and you'll get a steamier 155 degrees F. Push it 3 times, and it's cold drip brew, dude.

The Hey Joe mug heats and brews via a detachable, rechargeable battery affixed to its bottom. The battery sends heat to copper coils encased within the mug's center heating plate, which then heat the water to your desired temperature. Once heated, the water drips through the inserted coffee pod/grounds to create your fresh cup of Hey Joe.

Hey Joe travel mug brewers run as a Kickstarter campaign through July 3, 2014. Anticipated delivery date is November 2014.
