Think the tanned leather of Alaska Salmon Wallets retains that delightful, "oceanic" scent of where it came from? Oh boy, I hope so. No one will ever sit next to me on the bus, or get up in my personal space at a show ever again!

Ah, bummer. A read-through of Tidal Vision's tanning process reveals there is no fish odor to their wallets. They remove all the natural fish oils up front, and then start adding vegetable oils like those used on cow leather, so the final scent is basically the same as vegetable-tanned cow leather. Guess I'll have to stick an anchovy in one of the card slots instead.

Let's go back a few steps, though. Tidal Vision began making salmon leather products out of environmental solidarity. They upcycle the byproducts of certified-sustainable Alaskan fisheries' sockeye salmon catches. Further, they have created their own eco-friendly, vegetable-based tanning formula that, unlike most used in aquatic tanning, contains no formaldehyde or other harmful chemicals.

Once they receive their salmon outcasts from the fisheries, Tidal Vision spends 3 weeks hiding and tanning them--all by hand. The end results, as you see, are glossy strips of leather that don't look all that different than snakeskin.

Salmon Leather decks out 3 styles of Tidal Vision wallets: Billfold; Trifold; and Minimalist. All have organic canvas interiors. You can also take your omega-3-fatty-acid-love a step further with the company's Salmon Leather belt or ladies' clutch.
