Life Armor Disaster Shelter
The recent, tragic path of Hurricane Sandy reminds us that disaster planning shouldn't just be relegated to theoretical discussions and jokes about Zombie Apocalypses. Seikoh's Life Armor Disaster Shelter can accommodate and protect up to 4 people from various natural--or manmade--calamities from within its spherical, reinforced plastic walls. The pod measures 4 feet in diameter, weighs 175 pounds, and supports up to 9.3 tons of pressure on its body. Which is about the equivalent impact of two elephants falling from the sky. And speaking of falling from the sky, another nifty Life Armor fact: it can withstand its own celestial drop from 80+ feet, though presumably that stat applies only when its landing surface is water.
Inside the Life Armor, temporary residents take shelter amidst a cushioned urethane foam interior, and have access to GPS and solar panels, subfloor storage compartments, batteries, life jackets, a waterproof megaphone, and an emergency food supply.
Since they're made in Japan, the Life Armor pods of course also come in buyers' choice of candy-coated colors Sky Blue and Barbie Pink.
