Air Jordan Sneaker Candles

Air Jordan Sneaker Candles

For years Air Jordan sneakers have been preserved and immortalized in various ways. Some people wear them until their toes pop out the uppers. Some buy two pairs, and keep one boxed in mint condition to pass down to their children. Some put them in glass display cases running the entire length of their closet, which is the size of my whole condo.

Ivan Iarmin, through his shop What the Shape, takes a different approach: he encases his Air Jordans in wax and then lights them on fire.

Nah, just kidding. He makes molds of the Nike sneaker editions and turns them into candles. Palm-sized, not Shaq-, or even MJ-sized candles.

All of What the Shape's Air Jordan candles are handmade with what appears to be killer accuracy and detailing. He offers about 10 different editions of the sneakers, sold singly or in sets, for anyone out there looking for a no-fail gift for man.

Air Jordan sneaker candles measure about 5.1" long.

At printing, Air Jordan candles were selling for $15 apiece, with almost a dozen to choose from. Here is What the Shape's interpretation of Air Jordan XIIIs. Originally released in 1997, they weren't the first pair of AJs I owned, but they were the first I paid for myself (i.e., my mama refused to buy me another pair of $150 sneakers.)

I'd like to say I saved up weeks of lawn mowing money to afford them, but really I had a grandma who would slip $20 in my palm every time I saw her. So I just saved up weeks of seeing my grandma.

Funny, now that I can actually afford to spend $150 on a pair of Air Jordans, I think I'd rather have the $15 candle.

Now these, the Air Jordan IVs, were the first pair of Air Jordan sneaks I ever owned. Was it 1988? 1989? My mama made me get a half size too big so I could wear them through my next foot growth spurt.

In a twist that can only be described as completely bananas, AJ III candles come in both white unscented and yellow banana scented versions. Why not Unscented and New Sneaker Rubber scented? Or Unscented and Sweaty Pubescent Foot scen- ... wait. Maybe the "Banana" Air Jordan is one of those prank candles that starts out smelling like what it says on the label, but then, a third of the way through the burn, hits a new layer of Total. Nasal. Assault.
